Green Business and Engaging Employees: Getting Started
Glen Franklin, Director at Strategic Green Source and former SVP of Product Development at Citigroup shares his top ten tips for engaging employees in green business initiatives.

Motivating employees on green or sustainable business practices is the basis for success in green marketing and innovation. Here are the top ten methods and considerations for engaging employees in  your green programs:

1.      Investigate what green initiatives are already underway
2.      Collect information informally from employees
3.      Develop a way that employees can share experiences and learning across the company
4.      Use down-to-Earth tone and language, avoiding hype and promotional elements
5.      Consider how you communicate. Be creative and use low impact methods such as via the company intranet or on 100% recycled paper with useful tips on how to save energy
6.      Allow your employees to speak for themselves
7.      Create structural initiatives. A green support group helps to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing
8.      Assign champions for organizational units who can lead efforts and ensure coordination with other iniatives as well as green business goals
9.      Maintain an informal, community feel to the initiatives to foster a feeling of partnership between company and employee
10.  Ensure that there is an executive sponsor, ideally the CEO or President. This establishes the importance of green activities and provides political cover for those that want to engage
As activities align across the company, and employees become aware of the breadth of initiatives occurring, you will build momentum. Better yet, you will be on your way to a green future with more satisfied employees and the potential to capture new and growing revenue streams.
